The moderation team is also introducing new eligibility requirements for projects and accounts. Anyone who posts AI-generated content will receive an immediate permanent ban.

The moderation team of the subreddit, a meeting place for developers and users of free software, announced the decision in a statement on Reddit. According to the moderators, AI in its current form is at odds with the values of the open-source community. The statement is addressed to developers who use Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate code or documentation quickly. According to the team, their tokens have no value.

The moderators say they process dozens of requests every day from throwaway accounts and AI-generated submissions. With the new rules, the team aims to safeguard quality on the platform and reduce the workload created by what it calls ‘slop’, or digital junk.

Requirements for projects

Anyone wishing to promote a project on r/opensource must meet a series of conditions. A project must be at least one year old and actively maintained. School projects and basic applications, such as simple PDF readers or command-line music players, are not eligible. The same applies to projects developed primarily for AI infrastructure, such as MCPs.

In addition, a project must have at least three active contributors and already have its own user base. Calls to recruit new developers or supporters are no longer permitted. Projects in which AI has visibly been used will be rejected by the moderators without further assessment.

Rules for accounts and language

New requirements also apply to Reddit accounts. An account must be at least one year old and have a clear history on the platform. Anyone who creates a new account to promote a project and then asks for an exception risks a permanent ban.

The community will also only accept posts written directly in English. The moderators state that they cannot tell the difference between AI-generated texts and AI translations. Non-English-speaking users are therefore being referred to other platforms. According to the team, someone who does not master the language cannot check for themselves whether a translation is accurate either.

Zero tolerance and exceptions

The community applies a zero-tolerance policy to breaches of the content rules. Posting AI-generated LLM output leads directly to a permanent ban. Temporary bans are from now on reserved only for existing community members who make a human error of judgement.

Officially registered non-profit organisations and foundations, such as US 501(c) entities or international equivalents, are the only exception. They are exempt from the minimum age for accounts and projects, provided they ask the moderation team for permission in advance.

The decision shows that there is tension within open-source communities between the rise of AI-generated code and the desire to retain human oversight, quality and transparency. For developers affected by the new rules, the team points to alternative subreddits such as r/OpenSourceAIAllowed and r/TrueOpenSource.

The full report can be read via the statement on Reddit.

The Reddit community r/opensource is banning all projects made with or for AI.
