This allows organisations to run the Nutanix Cloud Platform on dedicated nodes within their own VPC in the sovereign AWS environment. The company is targeting the service at government bodies, healthcare institutions and financial services providers.

With availability on AWS ESC, organisations in regulated sectors can run their Nutanix environment within a sovereign AWS cloud, Nutanix said. GC2 on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is available immediately.

What the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is

AWS has set up a separate European organisation to manage the ESC. This organisation oversees the controls designed to keep customer data and metadata within the EU, and also owns the underlying infrastructure. According to AWS, the ESC therefore offers sovereignty-specific controls and operational separation. The environment is intended for government bodies and organisations in regulated sectors that need to comply with evolving EU requirements.

Own VPC and dedicated nodes

GC2 is intended for organisations with strict compliance requirements, such as financial services providers, healthcare institutions and government agencies. When deployed on AWS ESC, the environment runs within the customer’s own AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and on dedicated nodes. The compute, storage and management layers of the Nutanix clusters sit entirely within the boundaries of that VPC. Nutanix says this rules out shared tenancy and creates a clearly defined perimeter that can be audited for compliance purposes.

Existing operating model

Nutanix points out that public sector organisations often have to adapt their operating model when faced with new compliance requirements. That means new tooling, revised runbooks, retraining teams and updated governance frameworks. The company says GC2 avoids this by extending the Nutanix Cloud Platform to AWS infrastructure.

According to Nutanix, this allows organisations to migrate workloads to, or expand within, AWS ESC without overhauling their entire way of working, while continuing to meet sovereignty requirements. The company cites regulation, data centre exits, performance requirements and changing cost structures as reasons for moving workloads. Nutanix expects this ability to move workloads to help prevent vendor lock-in.

Target audience

Nutanix is positioning GC2 on AWS ESC as an option for organisations that remain hesitant about the public cloud for compliance reasons, and for organisations in regulated sectors more broadly. The company says it has more than 29,000 customers worldwide. Nutanix did not mention pricing, licensing terms or available regions within the ESC in the announcement.

Nutanix is making its Government Cloud Clusters available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
