These allow developers to connect AI agents in their IDE, terminal or AI workspace to the company’s payment infrastructure. According to Mollie, this lets them set up payment flows and prepare account actions, with outgoing actions always requiring human approval.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI agents to connect to external systems and data sources. Mollie is using this standard to link agentic developer tools directly to its APIs. The MCP server and plugin are available immediately via an open-source repository on GitHub and through Mollie’s developer portal, which also hosts an installation guide.

Live schemas as the basis for code

Mollie says the MCP server connects agents to the company’s current API documentation and production schemas. Rather than relying on what a language model learned during training, the agent retrieves the current API specification before writing any code. Developers describe the payment architecture they want, after which the agent sets up implementation code against the current endpoints. The company expects this to reduce errors caused by outdated endpoints or non-existent parameters.

The integration supports Mollie’s core APIs: Payments, Orders for workflows involving physical products, and Connect for splitting fees between multiple parties on marketplaces. As an example, Mollie cites a prompt in which a developer asks for a checkout for physical products using the Orders API and local European payment methods. The agent then consults the live schemas of the Orders API, maps out the structure of the order lines and delivers the implementation code.

Management from the workspace

Beyond writing code, Mollie says technical users can carry out more than 60 business actions from their workspace. Examples include generating payment links and preparing transfers from the Mollie Business Account (MBA). When asked to prepare a transfer of €500, the agent checks the account restrictions, drafts the transfer parameters and pauses. It then displays the recipient’s details and waits for explicit confirmation before the request is sent to Mollie’s infrastructure.

Users connect their account via OAuth. As a result, developers do not need to include API keys or private tokens in prompts or local environment files.

Human approval mandatory

Because Mollie is a regulated financial services provider, the agent only carries out actions that a human has approved. According to the company, the agent cannot independently execute outgoing financial transactions or change critical settings. Every outgoing action is paused and only finalised after a confirmation summary. The integration also operates within the access rights for each user role and the daily transaction limits set on the merchant account.

Rogier Schoute, CPO at Mollie, says developers spend a great deal of time on repetitive integration work, such as working through static documentation, setting up boilerplate code and tracking down errors in generated code. With MCP, Schoute says, Mollie is making its infrastructure accessible from the developer’s workspace. The agent prepares the implementation, while the developer retains control over the architecture and the final execution.

Background

Mollie was founded in Amsterdam in 2004. Following its merger with GoCardless, the company brings payments, accounts and business financing together on a single platform. Mollie says it serves more than 350,000 businesses in over 30 markets, with offices in Europe, the United States and Australia.

Mollie has released an MCP server and AI plugin that connect agents in development environments to its payment APIs.
