Fortinet launches FortiLink SASE Service for small branch offices

Fortinet is launching the FortiLink SASE Service. The service connects local networks at small and distributed sites to FortiSASE via Fortinet access points and switches. According to the company, no on-site FortiGate firewall is required and devices do not need to run their own endpoint agent. Network management and security policy are handled through a single console.

With the FortiLink SASE Service, Fortinet is extending its cloud-based security service FortiSASE to local networks. The service is aimed at small branch offices, remote sites and temporary locations. Wired and wireless devices at these sites are secured and managed via the cloud, with network management and security handled from a single console, according to Fortinet.

Connection via access points and switches

The connection to FortiSASE runs through supported Fortinet Wi-Fi access points and Ethernet switches. This connects the local network as a whole to the SASE service. Fortinet states that, as a result, no FortiGate firewall is needed on site. Network traffic inspection, security policy enforcement and management all take place centrally.

A key element of the announcement is that devices do not need to run their own agent. Fortinet indicates that the service also protects devices that cannot run FortiClient, the company’s endpoint agent. The company cites printers, cameras and IoT equipment as examples, alongside the devices employees use themselves.

Three benefits according to Fortinet

The company cites three benefits. First, according to Fortinet, more devices can be protected because security takes place at network level rather than on the device itself. Second, the company states that deployment becomes simpler, as entire LAN environments are connected to FortiSASE in one go, without an agent per device or security appliances per site. Third, Fortinet expects central management of network equipment and security policy to reduce operational complexity in distributed IT environments.

Focused on the thin edge

Fortinet positions the service as part of its approach to the so-called thin edge: small sites with limited local infrastructure and few on-site IT resources. The FortiLink SASE Service is based on the company’s networking and security architecture, in which network equipment and security services are closely aligned. According to Fortinet, protection thereby extends from individual endpoints to complete microbranch environments.

Anthony James, EVP Marketing at Fortinet, says organisations need flexibility when securing distributed sites, especially where separate security infrastructure or installing agents is not practical. James indicates that, by extending FortiSASE to local networks, Fortinet aims to protect users and devices while retaining central control over security policy.

Open questions

In the announcement, Fortinet does not specify exactly which access points and switches are supported. Information on pricing, licensing terms and how partners can offer the service is also missing. Anyone who already uses FortiSASE or has Fortinet network equipment installed at customer sites would therefore do well to check with the company which hardware is compatible and how the service is licensed.
