Gartner has presented its list of ten strategic technology trends for 2027 at Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando. Many of the trends revolve around deploying and controlling AI agents, from identity management to context layers. Digital sovereignty, disposable applications and biological computing also feature on the list.
Gartner analysts presented the trends at IT Symposium/Xpo, which runs until Thursday. According to Gene Alvarez, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, AI systems currently operate without an architectural framework. They generate software faster than humans can review it, create unmanaged access paths and tie processes to a single vendor. Alvarez argues that organisations should therefore actively shape the boundaries between organisation, human and machine, rather than simply following what models are capable of. Gartner clients can find the full analysis in the report Top Strategic Technology Trends for 2027.
Specialised AI models
The first trend concerns large quantitative models (LQMs). Gartner says that using general-purpose language models for numerical tasks poses risks to accuracy and compliance, because those models guess based on probability. LQMs are modular, hybrid neural network architectures designed specifically to process and analyse quantitative data. Alvarez says they will allow organisations to deploy autonomous forecasting in regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare.
Speech reasoning models are voice systems that reason directly on audio and track context and intent throughout a conversation. According to Alvarez, voice is the highest-volume interaction channel, yet customer service automation has so far failed to deliver the desired accuracy and resolution rates. He expects these models to make even complex conversations automatable.
According to Gartner, world models enable machines to understand space, time and causality. This allows autonomous agents to simulate future situations and predict the consequences of their actions before carrying them out. Investment in robotics, autonomous vehicles and spatial computing is driving this development.
Context, code and agent identity
AI context platforms provide agents with the contextual knowledge they need to interpret input and act in line with business objectives. Alvarez warns that organisations without such a context layer will face over-privileged agents, compliance failures, low trust and high token consumption. Gartner predicts that organisations that prioritise semantics in AI-ready data in 2027 will increase the accuracy of agentic AI by up to 80 per cent and cut costs by up to 60 per cent.
An agent coding harness is a closed-loop control system that governs the behaviour of autonomous development agents across the entire software development lifecycle. Without such a system, developers have to check machine output manually, which, according to Gartner, cancels out the productivity gains.
On AI agent identity, Gartner points out that agents carry out tasks independently on behalf of multiple people, while legacy systems do not support just-in-time access. The company predicts that by 2028 a quarter of security incidents at large organisations will be traceable to the misuse of AI agents. Alvarez says dynamic, policy-based access can replace static credentials and link models, prompts and credentials to an agent’s actions.
Security and sovereignty
Autonomous exposure remediation (AER) combines AI and automation to find, prioritise and remediate vulnerabilities. The system tests patches or virtual patches and rolls them out automatically in production environments.
Sovereign tech covers hardware, software, databases and AI models that are technically and legally designed so that organisations can realistically switch away from critical vendors. Gartner expects that by 2030 more than 75 per cent of non-US organisations will have a digital sovereignty strategy in place and will be relocating critical workloads.
Disposable applications and wetware
Disposable applications are applications that are deliberately phased out once they have served their purpose. According to Alvarez, this changes the way software is procured, designed and budgeted for.
The final trend is wetware as a service: cloud access to living or synthetic biological systems for computation. Gartner says silicon hardware cannot scale AI indefinitely because of its energy consumption, and that these organic processors can run complex algorithms in an energy-efficient way. The company expects the ten trends to have a noticeable impact on CIOs and IT leaders within five years.
